Hello Olabinjo, thank you for accepting our invitation. Could you please provide us with a brief introduction to yourself and your professional endeavors?

Certainly, it’s a pleasure to be here. I am Binjo Adeniran, a marketing professional with a rich background of over 10 years in the industry. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with both local and international companies, primarily in remote capacities. I embarked on my professional journey in 2011, and in 2012, I had my first opportunity to work remotely for a Nigerian company.

That’s quite impressive, considering your experience with international companies. Have you ever encountered any instances of discrimination as a person of color in your professional journey?

Fortunately, I have been fortunate to largely avoid instances of discrimination. However, there was one experience where my skills and expertise were doubted, making me wonder if such skepticism would have arisen had I belonged to a different racial background. Apart from that isolated incident, I have not faced any discrimination throughout my career.

Wow, working remotely for the majority of your career, do you ever experience feelings of loneliness due to the absence of in-person interactions?

Working remotely eliminates the need for daily commutes and physical presence in a workplace, along with the associated conversations and interactions. While some individuals may find this emotionally and mentally challenging, I personally appreciate the autonomy and comfort of working from my home office. Fortunately, I live in close proximity to friends, and I frequently spend time with them when desired. Additionally, I dedicate weekends to quality time with my family, ensuring that loneliness is not an issue for me.

Understandably, remote work brings its own set of challenges. Could you elaborate on the challenges you face as a remote worker?

Power outages and network issues are common challenges faced by remote workers in this country. Although I reside in a serviced estate and experience relatively fewer power disruptions, occasional outages do occur. Thankfully, I have managed to minimize data and network issues. Another challenge I encounter is the perception of being based in Africa, which can lead to rejections from certain companies despite the favorable time zone overlap with Europe. It’s disheartening, but unfortunately, it’s a reality.

The bias in remote work among Africans Talents is really disheartening. With your extensive experience, have you ever encountered rejections when applying for jobs?

Rejections are an inherent part of the remote work life, and they are not unique to me. In fact, I received two rejections just today, and I anticipate more in the future. It’s essential not to let these rejections discourage you and instead use them as learning opportunities and motivation to keep pushing forward.
