Job Description
HackerNoon is where technologists read, write, and publish. With 4M+ monthly readers and 45k+ contributors, we’re building publishing software for the next generation of independent tech media. Think green, think weird, think big — and help us make the internet a little more human.
💻 The Role
We’re looking for a Junior Full-Stack Developer who’s ready to roll up their sleeves, build robust APIs, and contribute to frontend features that bring them to life. About 70% of your time will be spent on backend development (Node.js, Express, Google Cloud Functions, MongoDB), with the remaining 30% supporting frontend work (Next.js, React, and related integrations).
This role is for builders who want to learn fast, break things carefully, and make an impact.
🛠 What You’ll Do
- Build and maintain REST APIs to power HackerNoon’s publishing platform
- Design MongoDB schemas, optimize queries, and implement middlewares
- Work on authentication & authorization projects (so no one edits stories they shouldn’t)
- Contribute to frontend features and integrations with designers & devs
- Debug, troubleshoot, and squash bugs across backend and frontend
- Vibe code, debug vibe code, level up vibe coded projects
- Write tests and improve QA practices
- Collaborate with the business team and community
- Learn deployments with Google Cloud Functions (serverless FTW)
- Join code reviews, share ideas, and grow as an engineer
🎯 What We’re Looking For
- 1–2 years of backend experience (or strong side projects/internships)
- Solid knowledge of Node.js + Express
- MongoDB fluency: schemas, lookups, and middlewares
- REST API best practices (CRUD, error handling, clean routes)
- Familiarity with frontend frameworks (Next.js/React preferred)
- Git workflows and teamwork chops
- Curiosity, problem-solving mindset, and hacker spirit 🧑💻
🌟 Bonus Points If You Have
- Deployed code to Google Cloud Functions
- Experience with frontend state management and API consumption
- Dabbled in Next.js/Vercel revalidation or frontend performance tuning
- Experience with cron jobs, automation, or backups
- Experience with Cloudflare or other domain providers
- Full-stack side projects or open-source contributions
- A love for writing or publishing tech blogs ✍
