Employment Status: Full-time employee

Location: Remote. We expect candidates to be based in Europe, although other locations may be considered in exceptional circumstances. Being located in or willing to relocate to Brussels is a plus, and Brussels-based hires would work from our Brussels office. Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in the country where they are based. Please note that The Future Society is currently unable to sponsor visas.

Starting Date: As soon as possible after offer, estimated start in November 2026

Compensation: The Future Society uses a transparent, formula-based compensation framework that takes into account role level and geographic location. Compensation is not negotiated on an individual basis. The compensation for the roles is as follows:

  • Analyst: $58,400 USD / €53,900
  • Associate: $75,300 USD / €69,500
  • Senior Associate: $99,200 USD / €91,500

(figures shown are for candidates based in Europe; other regions vary per TFS’s compensation structure)

Benefits: For U.S.-based staff, benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement plan with an employer match at three percent of salary, 30 days of annual leave (including floating public holidays), and 10 days of sick leave each year. For non-U.S. staff, we match the U.S. standard as closely as possible or use local mandatory levels, whichever is highest.

Position Summary:

The Future Society (TFS) is seeking team members for our European AI Governance team. These hires will play a critical part in scaling up our well-established European AI governance activities, including advisory and advocacy work, international coordination efforts, and policy research.

We are open to hiring into the team across three seniority levels: Analyst, Associate, and Senior Associate.

Why join The Future Society?

  • A chance to do meaningful work for a mission-driven, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a track record of outsized impact.
  • Meaningful work at the frontier of AI governance. TFS has a track record of translating policy research into real governance outcomes, and this role is central to how that work reaches the world.
  • You’ll be building something. The communications function is growing, and the person in this role will help establish its systems, rhythms, and outputs over the next 12 months, with room for the role to evolve as the function does.
  • You’ll be joining a small, high-performing global team connected to an international network of AI policy experts, governments, academic institutions, and civil society organizations.

Responsibilities

We’re looking to build a mix of profiles on the European AI Governance team, including legal, diplomacy, foreign affairs, institutional design, verification technology, AI evaluations, national security, trade policy, risk management, strategic government affairs, and emergency preparedness, as well as more generalist policy profiles. Responsibilities scale with seniority:

Analyst:

  • Support European AI governance policy research, including reports, memos, explainers, blogs
  • Support advocacy by drafting materials (comment letters, briefings, regulatory submissions) and tracking regulatory developments
  • Support stakeholder outreach and coalition-building, tracking engagement and attending meetings
  • Assist with events and convenings
  • Support projects for other themes as needed
  • Help build organizational knowledge alongside the manager and senior team members

Associate:

  • Drive TFS’ policy engagement, in Europe and allied jurisdictions, by researching, preparing and disseminating AI policy memos and other outputs, and building and managing relationships with policymakers, civil society groups, and other relevant actors
  • Convene and manage relevant stakeholders by organizing and participating in workshops, working groups, joint written outputs, events and conferences (including managing contacts and invitations, event content, and other written material)
  • Work with TFS’ leadership to map and build coalitions of stakeholders to advocate for and support implementation of our policy positions in Europe and elsewhere
  • Attend and represent TFS at national and international AI policy forums, events and workshops with multi-stakeholder AI technical and policy experts
  • Support organizational needs as required including project and knowledge management, fundraising, grant proposals, impact planning and assessments, and strategic communications

Senior Associate (in addition to Associate responsibilities, with greater autonomy):

  • Manage critical stakeholder relationships independently, attend external events (including speaking engagements) without direct supervision
  • Generate ideas for high-impact projects and contribute to the European team’s strategy
  • Produce publication-ready written work
  • Likely to manage staff at the Associate or Analyst level; expected to treat people management as an essential area for skills development

We recognize candidates may not neatly fit one tier. The application will ask which level you’re applying for based on the experience bands below, but this is a starting point for us and not a final assignment. We assess actual fit through the hiring process. The table below gives some guidance for the years of experience we typically look for:

AnalystAssociateSenior Associate
Experience overall0-2 years2-5 years5+ years
AI governance-specific experience0-1 years1-2 years3-4 years

The ideal candidate for this role will have a lot of the skills and experiences described above. However, you may not need to tick every box to be a great candidate. If you are hesitant about applying because you’re not sure if you’re the perfect fit, we encourage you to apply.

Qualifications we’re looking for:

  • Commitment to TFS’ mission of aligning AI through better governance
  • Understanding of AI governance issues, ecosystem, political economy, and the incentives of actors and decision makers, scaling with seniority (basic understanding at Analyst level; exceptional and nuanced at Senior Associate level)
  • Previous experience in Brussels and knowledge of EU AI-related lawmaking and governance efforts are desirable
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to produce concise, accurate, and well-structured written work (with more independence expected at higher levels)
  • Strong policy research and analysis skills, including a clear understanding of editorial and research best practices
  • Strong time management skills, including the ability to effectively balance competing tasks and projects
  • Proven ability to work independently, responsibly, reliably, and asynchronously in a remote-first environment (increasing autonomy expected at Associate and Senior Associate levels)
  • Full professional working proficiency in English; French or German language skills are desirable but not required
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Slack, and project
  • management tools (e.g. Superhuman Docs)
  • For Senior Associate specifically: demonstrated ability to contribute novel ideas to the field, ability to lead a project end-to-end with minimal supervision, and people management skills/experience are highly desirable but not required, a committed interest in developing them is expected
