Job Description

At AssemblyAI, we’re creating a leading Applied AI company by building powerful models to transcribe and understand audio data, exposed through a straightforward web API.

Progress in AI is moving at an unprecedented pace–we keep our pulse on the latest developments and breakthroughs in AI research and use these advances to inform our production-ready AI models. Our Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) models already outperform companies like Google, AWS, and Microsoft – which is why hundreds of companies and thousands of developers are using our API to transcribe and understand millions of videos, podcasts, phone calls, and Zoom meetings every day.

We’ve raised funding by leading investors including Accel, Insight Partners, Y Combinator’s AI Fund, Patrick and John Collision, Nat Friedman, and Daniel Gross. As part of a huge and emerging market, AssemblyAI is well on its way to becoming the leader in applied AI.

Join our world-class, remote team and help us build an iconic AI company!

About the role:

This person will conduct applied research in Speech and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in a team setting. Specific responsibilities include: learning new ideas from research and technology communities, writing code to implement new ideas, training new models, meticulously evaluating these models, and collaborating with engineers to deploy models in production. This person should have a strong background in (applied) deep learning research and should be able to write high-quality code. With a deep understanding of the fundamentals of deep learning and its applications, they will contribute to other projects through discussions as well.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide scientific leadership on ambitious research projects that have the potential for high impact on AssemblyAI’s products and the state of applied AI technology
  • Engage with research communities through activities such as publishing papers or participating in conferences
  • Execute those research projects in a scientifically sound manner
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest AI research and share this knowledge across the company
  • Collaborate with the technology leadership team to prioritize the research agenda, define the scope of research projects, and take charge of their execution
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to deploy new models into production

What You’ll Need:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 2+ years of professional experience in Deep Learning research & development
  • Excellent knowledge of deep learning architectures and techniques such as CNNs, Transformers, SSMs, self-supervised learning, etc.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with PyTorch or JAX
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in technical matters

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with JAX/Pallas/TPUs
  • Experience in training large (Transformer) models on distributed systems
  • Experience in training/fine-tuning (multimodal) Large Language Models
  • Expertise in writing high performance CPU/GPU/TPU code
  • Track record of publications in deep learning or its applications at top-tier conferences

You May Be a Great Fit if:

  • Highly self-motivated and keen to have real-world impact
  • Detail-oriented, analytical, and creative problem solver
  • Meticulous in all aspects (code, data, modeling, …)
  • Able to work effectively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
