Job Description

Smile ID is Africa’s leading digital identity verification and Know Your Customer (KYC) provider. We were founded to solve the specific challenges faced by companies trying to onboard users in unique African conditions. We have built proprietary machine learning algorithms and a technology platform to cater for all skin tones, entry-level devices and users operating in low bandwidth environments. We pride ourselves on stopping fraudulent transactions while reducing onboarding friction for honest users. We have enabled some of the fastest-growing businesses across Africa to scale their client bases and defeat fraud in real-time, as evidenced by performing over 200 million identity checks to date. Our client base includes hundreds of enterprises, including banks, lending companies, cryptocurrency platforms, ride-sharing giants, and payment companies. We’re growing very quickly. We did more verifications in 2024 than in 2016-2023 combined!

Our team is a diverse group of hardworking and fun-loving Smilers spanning 4 offices, 7 countries and many time zones. We are venture-backed by African, U.S. and European investors.

We are BUILDERS, and your day-to-day will involve building things that PROTECT people and serve as the foundation for trust in Africa’s digital economy. We believe everyone is an OWNER, and with this opportunity, you have the autonomy to do your best work and grow, the flexibility to be creative, and an opportunity to put your unique stamp on our mission.

What are you waiting for? Come with us on this amazing journey!

The Role
We’re looking for a hands-on marketing intern to join our team this winter (or summer, depending on where you’re reading this from). You’ll work directly with our CEO, VP of Commercial, and our marketing team on a multi-channel go-to-market campaign.

This is not your average internship. One day, you’ll be doing competitor research using AI or drafting a press release for review by the CEO. The next, you might be scouting props for a video shoot, brainstorming wild outdoor ad concepts, or yes… even tasting wine. You’ll learn by doing—and help shape what this internship becomes.

What the Role Involves

  • Supporting go-to-market campaign execution across digital and physical channels
  • Conducting research on target customers and competitors
  • Assisting in copywriting, content development, and product messaging
  • Helping coordinate events, activations, and local partnerships
  • Participating in creative brainstorms and campaign reviews
  • Solving problems creatively through a hands-on approach by identifying resources and testing ideas in real-world settings

What We’re Looking For

  • Based in Cape Town or Johannesburg
  • Love to learn, think fast, and work even faster
  • Thrive in ambiguity and can manage multiple projects at once
  • Have an eye for detail, a bias for action, and are an excellent executor
  • Want to work at the intersection of brand, product, and customer experienceĀ
  • Like big ideasĀ andĀ small detailsĀ
  • Aren’t afraid to roll up your sleeves (literally)
  • Care deeply about good storytelling, clever marketing, and thoughtful design
  • Not afraid to ask questions or pitch ideas—no matter how wild
  • Prior marketing experience isn’t required, but relentless curiosity and hustle are

Compensation & Perks

  • 3 months salary
  • Flexible working hours (remote-friendly, with in-person opportunities)
  • Work directly with execs on real-world projects
  • Cool company swag + access to team events
  • Mentorship and learning opportunities from seasoned operators
  • A front-row seat to how tech companies scale across Africa
  • If you crush it, potential for a full-time offer after your internship

By applying for the role, you consent to the GDPR Statement

P.S. This is not the kind of internship where you fetch coffee. Unless, of course, you love coffee. In which case, we’ll join you. ā˜•
