Rethinking Economics International is hiring a Communications Lead! We’re looking for someone to bring creativity, organisation and leadership to a role at the very heart of our team. This role is offered at 4 days a week. We are also open to hiring two candidates in a job share, working 4 or 5 days combined. About Rethinking Economics International

Rethinking Economics (RE) is an international network of students, academics and professionals building better economics in society and the classroom. RE started as a student movement in 2012 and has since grown to become a youth movement for anyone interested in relearning, rethinking or rebuilding economics.

What we’re looking for

2026 is a huge year for communications at Rethinking Economics! We are launching an individual membership and making big changes to the governance of our network. This means the right person for this role will be responsible for maintaining our current communications channels AND supporting the team to create new systems for our changing organisation – including the launch of our exciting, new brand… You will be the voice of Rethinking Economics, representing us across social media, website copy, newsletters, email journeys, press releases & more.

Responsibilities

Purpose of the Role: 

To lead on external communications for Rethinking Economics.

Main Areas of Responsibility

  • Managing the [email protected] inbox
  • Creating & scheduling content for REI’s social media (Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) and day-to-day management of the channels
  • Sourcing content for and sending our monthly newsletter
  • Producing, publishing and reviewing website content, including the REI blog
  • Liaison with and recruitment of students, writers, designers and video editors where relevant for content creation
  • Oversee email journeys and write copy to meet the needs of our new membership offer
  • Own Rethinking Economics’ relationships with press
  • Support in the creation and delivery of REI’s communications strategy
  • Support the rollout of REI’s new brand and redevelopment of rethinkeconomics.org website

We recognise that experience may be gained outside of the paid workplace, voluntary experience is also welcomed. A strong background in economics, campaigning and movement building would be of great advantage.

Terms & Conditions

Reporting to: Associate Director

Starting salary: 

  • £31,700 – £33,930 pro rata [4 days: £25,360 – £27,144]. 

All salaries across the organisation will be increased by 5% in April 2026. We are also undergoing an organisational fair pay review (likely implemented by April 2027) investigating fair global pay and opportunities for moving to a 4-day working week.

The salary offer is non-negotiable but based on having the relevant experience for the role. This can be re-negotiated after the 6 month probation period. We intend that the successful candidate in this role will progress and develop within the organisation, support and guidance will be provided for this.

Start date: As soon as possible 

Contract type: Fixed term (with likely offer of permanent contract after first year)

Benefits: 

  • Competitive holiday entitlement: 25 days holiday + bank holidays pro rata in addition to winter break for all staff (not taken from entitlement) between 25th December and 1st January. 
  • High parental leave: 12 weeks fully paid maternal/primary carer leave and 10 weeks fully paid for paternal/supporting partner leave.
  • Personal investment: We aim for Rethinking Economics to be a place of continual learning. All members of staff have access to a shared training budget for opportunities relevant to their role.
  • Remote benefits: A working from home payment of up to £200 a year, contributions to coworking space costs if required and budget for necessary equipment for working from home.
  • 5% pension employer matched contributions.
  • Additional country specific benefits: The country you are working from may have its own statutory benefits and we will ensure that we meet these requirements. Beyond that we will ensure that they are roughly equal to benefits available within the UK benefits (as listed above).

Hours: 4 days a week, 7 hours per day (with an unpaid hour for lunch). Evening and weekend work will sometimes be necessary, for which time off in lieu can be claimed. We support flexible working across the whole team although we ask that you ensure one of your working days is Tuesday.

Location: Rethinking Economics has associated offices in Manchester, UK; Johannesburg, South Africa; Berlin, Germany; and Copenhagen, Denmark.
